Gotham FC battled back from a sluggish start to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against KC Current on Sunday, April 14th. The home side endured a difficult opening 45 minutes, struggling to find their rhythm and conceding possession to the visitors.  KC Current capitalized on Gotham's shortcomings, threatening on the counter and taking the lead through Chawinga in the 17th minute.

However, the tide began to turn for Gotham with the introduction of fresh legs in the second half. The substitutions, mainly Crystal Dunn, injected much-needed energy and urgency into their play, allowing them to wrest control of the midfield and pin KC Current back in their own half. This period of sustained pressure eventually paid dividends as Gotham found the equalizer off a corner by Esther Gonzalez's goal in the 51st minute.

Despite their spirited fightback, Gotham were unable to find a winner in the remaining time. Nonetheless, holding top of the table and highest scoring team in the league to 1 goal is a great accomplishment. Especially for a team missing so many key players.

Credit must go to the coaching staff making adjustments and the impact of the second-half substitutes, who completely transformed the game for Gotham FC and earned them a share of the spoils.

There were many good performances but Gotham had 4 heroes on the night:

  • Crystal Dunn was a constant threat in a more central position, using her high soccer IQ and skill to create momentum and numerous scoring chances for Gotham.

  • Yazmeen Ryan provided a strong presence in midfield, initiating Gotham's offense. Creating 5 chances. Yazmeen continues her strong start to the 2024 season.

  • Esther’s work rate is unmatched. Her movement is second to none. She found herself twice alone on corners where she made KC pay for it.  Her second goal of the season.

  • Casey Miller was a rock in goal against her former club, coming up with several big saves to secure the draw for Gotham FC.
