Washington outshoots Gotham 10 to 2 on frame as 10 player Washington Spirit get the better of nearly full strength Gotham FC in the second game of the 2022 Challenge cup.
Kristie Mewis makes her Gotham debut and scores the lone goal from the penalty spot in one of the few bright spots for the team in this tough road matchup. Ifeoma Onumonu also makes her season debut at forward while talented youngster Taryn Torres gets her first start. Estelle Johnson pairs with Ali Krieger in perhaps a move to better handle the speed of Washington's attack.
Standout performances from Imani Dorsey and Estelle Johnson as they helped keep the dangerous Trinity Rodman off the scoresheet. Often isolated, they both did well not to overcommit and made timely tackles. Also, after settling in, rookie Taryn Torres look every bit the heir apparent at the 6.
Ashley Hatch, the halftime substitute got Washington back in the game with a great volley off a loose ball in the box in the 61st minute. In the 65th, Midge Purce again gets her body between the ball and defender and forces the ref to hand out a second yellow to Washington defender Amber Brooks. Giving Gotham a one player advantage.
Gotham Doesn't take advantage of their advantage and Washington is the team on the front foot, searching for a go ahead goal. Washington increases their possession total to 55 percent and finishes with 21 shots to Gotham's 5. Gotham only getting 2 shots on target.
Two games in, Gotham looks steady on defense as they have perhaps the best back four in the league. But something is missing. Gotham looks anemic in the attack only getting 3 shots on target through 2 matches. The lone goal a penalty.
Next up is the last of the away Challenge Cup matches before heading back to Red Bull Arena for 3 consecutive home matches. Gotham FC faces off against the new look Orlando Pride Wednesday 7pm on paramount plus.
