Gotham FC clinches the playoff with a professional win against an aggressive Utah Royals team that features a core of former Gotham FC and Sky Blue FC players. Here are 5 quick takeaways from the match.
1. Early Goal Sets the Tone
There is nothing more a tired team on their third game in a week needs than an early goal to take the pressure off. Yazmeen's swift and clinical strike in the early minutes of the match proved to be a crucial turning point. The early lead not only provided a psychological advantage but also set the stage for a more controlled and confident performance. It allowed Gotham to dictate the tempo and play on their terms.
2. Familiar Faces Return to Gotham #oncegotham
Gotham B… the Utah Royals have the presence of multiple former Gotham players on roster adding an extra layer of emotion to the match. Three of those players started the match. Paige Monaghan, Cameron Tucker, and Mandy Haught.Â
2023 championship winning keeper Mandy Haught received her championship ring pre game and is the main reason the game ended up 1-0 and not 4-0. Mandy has a bright future and there is no 2023 championship without her. Another game standout, Paige Monaghan showed off why she was a fan favorite in Gotham for years. She's always been all gas and no brakes. Always an aggressive attacker and creating danger anytime she's on the field. She's grown into her leadership role and her aggression was exhibited through the entire roster. Utah May not be able to match Gotham’s talent and cohesiveness, but can make up for it by fighting for every inch of the pitch. That stems from Paige’s influence.Â
Missing from the gameday roster is former Sky Blue FC 2018 Rookie of the Year Imani Dorsey. Imani had successfully transitioned from attacker to one of the most fierce 1v1 defending outside backs in the league. Earning her a call-up to national team camp. Last season Imani took personal time away from the sport but was instrumental behind the scenes supporting Gotham to their title. Returning to the game this year in Utah, Imani looked every part the lock down defender she was prior to stepping away. But an Achilles tear sidelined her comeback. Looking forward to seeing her return again. Â
3. Yazmeen Ryan Shines
Yazmeen Ryan ascendancy continues. Yazmeen continued her impressive form, delivering another standout performance. Her contributions on both ends of the field were instrumental in Gotham's victory. Ryan's aggression and confidence has been on display this season. Gotham loaded up on National Team players this offseason. Players that could threaten her position and minutes on the pitch. Ryan has risen to the challenge. Proving not only is she impossible to take off the field but that she is her National Team teammate’s equal. Her ability to create scoring chances and provide defensive solidity has been a key factor in the team's success this season. Yazmeen scored a beautiful one-time weak foot goal early in this match.
4. Defense
Gotham's defense put on a clinic, shutting out Utah with a series of crucial tackles, blocks, and interceptions. Sonnett, Davidson, and Carter were simply sensational, earning the shutout and securing the win for their team. Gotham has turned from an all out pressing team to a team that can press when advantageous and absorb pressure when needed. Utah was ultra aggressive, hunting for turnovers and quick strike transitions. Gotham's backline was up to the task in this one. This task was made much harder without defensive midfield stalwart Nealy Martin absent from this match from yellow card accumulation.
5. Clinching the Playoffs: A Significant Milestone
Gotham FC's victory over the Utah Royals secured their place in the NWSL playoffs. Second time in 2 seasons under head coach Juan Carlos Amoros. This achievement is a testament to the team's hard work, dedication, and consistent performances throughout the season. It has not been easy for Gotham this season. Battling injuries, playing more games than any other team, including trips to Costa Rica and now Jamaica. But Gotham has possibly the deepest and most talent rich roster in the league and if any team can handle the load it is this one. Gotham’s coaching staff deserves a lot of credit. Managing the roster as best they can and making this the most successful season in club history with the most points and wins. Credit also includes the players. Who have put in professional performance after professional performance of late.
Up next: Another 3 game week.Â
Gotham is in Washington DC to celebrate their 2023 victory. Then they face another 3 game week. Away at KC. Then to Jamaica on Wednesday in their quest to advance in the Concacaf W Champions cup group stage, then return home for a Saturday night game against Bay FC. Â
Gotham needs to continue to manage the roster and minutes and continue taking care of business and getting results.Â
