Gotham FC and the Portland Thorns are set to clash in a highly anticipated playoff showdown at Red Bull Arena. This matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter between two talented teams with contrasting styles of play.

3 Things to Watch For:

  1. Gotham's Next Level: Of the top 4 teams I will say this this. Gotham is the one team that can absolutely get to another level. Gotham FC has been a defensive force this season, boasting a stingy backline that has been difficult to break down. Their ability to limit scoring opportunities by simply pinning other teams in their end will be crucial against a Portland side that can be dangerous in attack. Gotham in the 2023 playoffs simply played mistake free football and did not give up a goal until the final. They did the same through most of the group stages of the Summer cup and Champions cup. Expect them to play in Portland's half for most of this game. The best way to keep Sophia Smith at bay is to force her to track back to get on the ball.

  2. Portland's Attacking Prowess: The Thorns possess a potent attacking unit, led by a number of talented forwards. Their ability to create scoring chances and convert them will be key to their success in this match. Weaver changes this team. Smith can create her own chances but she needs players who can free her up. This is the matchup to watch for. Who lines up on the right side opposite Weaver. Is it Jess Carter? One of the best 1v1 defenders in the world or is it Mandy Freeman who is a two way player who can not only defend but kick start the attack as seen by her amazing goal and perfectly weighted long ball assist against Utah.

  3. The Impact of Depth: Depth wins championships. Gotham's bench is as good as many team's starting 11. If Lynn Williams is healthy it may mean a front line of Williams, Esther, and Yazmeen Ryan. This means Ella Stevens will be able to be brought on as a game changer. That is a scary talent that no team wants to see after chasing Gotham's starting 3 for 60 plus minutes. Gotham also may return Jessica Silva and CeCe Kizer. Two veterans who can also change games. Gotham has relied on depth all season with many injuries and international call-ups. If Tierna Davidson is still unavailable with a knee injury, Sam Hiatt will be ready as she has all season to fill in seamlessly.

Where to Watch:

The match will be televised on ABC and streamed on ESPN+

Don't miss this exciting playoff clash between two of the NWSL's top teams! Gotham is opening up the upper bowl for this match. This will be hopefully a record breaking crowd to witness Gotham's first ever home playoff match. See you all there.
