Harrison, NJ – NJ/NY Gotham FC enters the NWSL playoffs with renewed momentum and a roster bolstered by the return of key players from injury. With a strong regular season performance and a clear tactical approach, Gotham FC is well-positioned to make a deep playoff run.
Last week I was a featured guest on the Equalizer podcast. The message I wanted to get out to the public was "No one wants to see Gotham in the Playoffs". The reason for this declaration was that of the 4 top teams in the playoffs (Washington, KC, Orlando) Gotham has another level they can get to. Gotham has been rotating their line-up often due to injuries, Olympics, outside competitions. Similar to last season where Gotham did not have a set starting 11 until the playoffs.
Despite setting records for the least goals against with 14 different center back pairings, the return of Tierna Davidson raises the level of this team. Tierna is a physical presence and an enforcer. Yet, as seen throughout the match with Portland is more than comfortable taking space ahead her on the dribble and playing pin point long switches to unbalance opponents.
Not only Tierna, but Lynn Williams is healthy. If you know one thing about this league is to never bet against Lynn Williams. She has won the NWSL title essentially every other year of her career. Her unselfish two way tenacious play is the key to winning titles. It is no surprise the Gotham player who calmy scored the opening goal and also trapped and slotted the ball out of bounds in the final moments of the championship was Lynn. It had to be. It is what she does. Win.
Gotham may not win the championship. But anyone discounting Gotham as not the favorites in this knockout tournament is foolish. Here are three reasons Gotham can raise their level and win a 2nd championship in two seasons.
Key Factors for Gotham FC's Success:
Injury Returns: The return of key players such as Davidson, Williams, Silva from injury significantly strengthens Gotham FC's squad depth and tactical flexibility. A fully fit roster allows for more strategic late game substitutions and increased offensive and defensive pressure. Gotham was able to bring Jenna Nighswonger, Bruninha, and McCall Zerboni to both keep the pressure on and shepherd the game to the finish line. There is no rest against Gotham.
Controlling Field Tilt: Gotham FC's ability to dominate possession and control where on the field the action takes place is crucial. By maintaining high pressure in dangerous areas and limiting the opponent's opportunities out off their half, Gotham FC can dictate the flow of the match and create scoring chances. Gotham allowed Portland only 50 passes per half on their side of the field. Sophia Smith has conversations with their back line about just getting the ball out because Gotham was pinning them in.
Tidy Play Out of the Back: Gotham FC's back line is their key to success. They have to be mistake free as they press far up the field. Accurate passing, smart decision-making, and effective distribution allows Gotham to not break pressing shape. Any mistake can be costly. Carter, Davidson, and Sonnett have been around 90 percent passing completion.
Conclusion
With a deep roster and a clear tactical approach, Gotham FC is poised to make a significant impact in the NWSL playoffs. If they play up to their potential they can achieve their goal of defending their NWSL Championship title.
